I am the founder and Executive Chairman of Gust; founder and CEO of the US Real Estate Market; founder and Chairman Emeritus of New York Angels; Managing Principal of Rose Tech Ventures; a Partner in True Global Ventures, a founding member of Space Angels; and author of the New York Times bestsellers The Startup Checklist: 25 Steps to a Scalable, High-Growth Business and Angel Investing: The Gust Guide to Making Money & Having Fun Investing in Startups;
I founded the Finance, Entrepreneurship and Economics track at Singularity University, of which I am an Associate Founder.
I’ve been involved in the development of the Silicon Alley technology community in New York for many decades, including working with online data services in the 1970s, founding an early personal computer training company in the 1980s, a wireless data information network in the 1990s, an international angel investing platform in the 2000s and an institutional capital markets platform for commercial real estate in the 2020s.
Startups that I seed-funded have been acquired by Google, Amazon, Facebook, Uber, Intel, Oracle, S&P Global, Kodak, CBS, and other public companies.
I co-founded the AREA real estate technology accelerator in New York City, was Mentor of the Year at NYU Stern Business School, and was nicknamed 'The Pitch Coach' by BusinessWeek (you may have come across my TED video on the subject, which has had well over a million views to date).
Before entering the technology field, I had prior careers in real estate and government. My avocation is the archaic art and craft of letterpress printing, and I am a book collector with an extensive collection on the history of the book.
I’m a native New Yorker; a graduate of the New York City public schools and Horace Mann High School. I received my BA in Urban Affairs from Yale, an MBA in Finance from Columbia Business School, and an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from Stevens Institute of Technology. I am an Associate Fellow of Pierson College at Yale and a member of the Entrepreneurship Advisory Boards of Columbia Business School and the Yale Entrepreneurial Institute.
