Itโs hard for me to express how I feel about the rise of gun violence in the USA. But fortunately I had a good editor that helped me write this in โBullets into Bellsโ edited by Brian Clements, Alexandra Teague, and Dean Rader.
โI survived my shooting on the fifth of July, a decade after becoming a naturalized US citizen. I was walking to the subway, and one block from my apartment I heard a loud boom. When I looked down, I saw blood pouring out from my chest. The shooter was aiming for a pregnant woman. I didnโt know either of them, but he kept pulling the trigger and one bullet hit me in the chest.
I would have died, but a barber named John D. Morant saw me on the street and placed his hand over mine. I tried to keep in touch, but less than a year after my shooting, John went away to see family and friends in the South. I called him up and got no answer. A week later, I found out that John had been gunned down and killed.
Iโm not the only immigrant who has been shot in the chest. The woman was not the first victim of abuse. And John wonโt be the last black man shot and killed. You read about us in papers, in poems, and in statistical charts. But we arenโt just numbers. We are not words. We are not them. We are people. And I pray that you never become one of us.โ
