BIRTHDAY MORNING: 40 unlived years
“It is two o’clock. I have been missing for four hours only.”
The big wooden door slams shut behind me and blows a warm breath of wind against my back. It seems as if I had left my whole previous life behind that old door that surely has allowed a great deal of pain through it; having carefully looked through all the significant events of my life so far again, scene by scene and in slow motion, and then stepped through the sizzling portal in a film-like manner.
