Hey y’all!

Y’all are capable of a lot of good, and I’m feeling pretty useless with some stuff that has happened recently so I’m reaching out.

A friend out on the tiny island I live on very unexpectedly, and tragically ended his life about a week ago. He was a very well known person, had his own business, worked in a locals bar, was on the fire department, had hired some of the younger guys in town. It has rocked us to our core, and it has been just an impossible week. We’re a tiny community of 1100, something like this doesn’t just happen and not impact all of us.

A few years ago I had photographed him and his wife — he’s from Romania, and has family there that he’s lovingly been taking care of for a long time. We had grown friendly after working together, always waving when we pass each other, saying hi, and catching up. He was on the fire department I began my career in, and was building a friend’s home. Everyone in our tiny community has these little 1-3 degree of separation ties to him.

He was one of the happiest, most cheerful humans. He always made everyone feel cared for, no matter how little he actually knew you, and never could say anything bad about anyone.

With everything, a small group of his island family is raising money to pay for his funeral as its next to impossible for his family to do. He’s been given a plot here at the cemetery, and his family deserves rest, love, and support during this time — not bills. But to me, that includes not just his Romania family, but his island family. Every single one of them have donated hundreds (and sometimes more), despite all working in the service industry in a tourist area that was completely assaulted by COVID/the consequences of COVID last summer.
