Still figuring out how I want to participate on CH: Mostly just listening, observing, and figuring out ways to influence CH culture for inclusivity/accessibility

I’m a Cyborg (Hard-of-Hearing)πŸ€– - Got a hearing aid on my left ear and a cochlear implant on my right ear.

Clubhouse is not an accessible platform for Deaf/HOH or Blind or Non-verbal or People who have/are recovering from Brain Injuries or other invisible disabilities

How to Support Accessibility on CH:
_____________________________________
*Moderators: If you’re going to moderate a room, it would be best practice to ask if anyone is in the audience if there are any needs to be accommodated for. This check-in needs to be done periodically throughout the conversation especially if the room audience gets bigger.

Ask the question: β€œIs there anyone in the room that would like us to be aware that there are needs that are not being accommodated for as we speak about this topic? If so, would you please press the β€˜Raise Hand’ sign. We’ll give about 10 - 15 seconds to give space for those to do so.”

If a person or people respond, please give them an opportunity to come to stage to vocalize their needs.

Keep in mind that some users are not comfortable sharing their needs or do not know how to advocate for their needs.

If no one responds to the invitation, please proceed to have the conversation but remind yourself and others that there are people who exist on a wide spectrum and range of sensory experiences and abilities to process auditory information.

How to support those who are Deaf/HOH:

Stating your name lets the person using the accessibility tool know who is speaking. Additionally, speaking over each other makes transcription service unusable for the accessible user.

When Speaking:

Use one mic. and wait 1-2 second between speakers

State your name β€œHi, this is Edwin...”

When you’re finished speaking say β€œI’m done speaking” or β€œI’m complete”

Hoping that we can all be in this together for 2021 and beyond. I hope we can all cultivate spaces that allow each other to be honest and the room to grow.
