The witch hunting was the largest massacre of women in human history. Taking place in Europe over a period of three centuries, hundreds of thousands of women were burned and hanged in this witch hunting.

The witch hunting were not just the product of papal fanaticism or the machinations of the Roman Inquisition, but instead the secular courts took on a more important role. In one of the largest witch hunting between 1580 and 1670, the hunt was taken over by the secular courts and suppressed more severely. Jurists, judges and demonologists also systematised the witch hunting and refined the relevant laws. They collaborated with the most prominent intelectuals of the time, among them the philosopher Hobbes and the jurist Jean Bodin.
By analysing the mechanisms of persecution, Federici argued that the witch hunt was not a spontaneous process, but an organised political campaign.

The 1970s saw the rise of the feminist movement. It was only in the 1970s that the hidden gendered elements of the witch identity were discovered, the witch hunt emerged from the layers of cover, and the witch was soon given a name as a symbolic image of resistance by contemporary women:
