In Zen Buddhism, the kyōsaku or keisaku (Japanese: 警策, Chinese: 香板, xiāng bǎn) is a flat wooden stick used during periods of meditation.
Translated as "warning stick", "awakening stick", or “encouragement stick”, the kyōsaku is not considered punishment, but a compassionate means to reinvigorate the meditator, who may be tired or in the "monkey mind" state.
