What is the human subject?
The subject in analytic philosophy is the “what is it like” to be
A being/an observer capable of “qualia”/conscious experience
What is the lens we’re analysing society through? Biopower vs necropower, to start
Foucault’s biopower
a term describing the practices of modern nation states through which they regulate & control their subjects
Biopolitics bio politics is a regulatory power, it focuses on the collective body, ie populations, species etc & aims to wield power, knowledge & control over a population
The state is an example of this
Disciplinary politics anatomo-politics or disciplinary power, focuses on the individual bodies & seeks to subjugate the bodies
examples include schools, prisons, armies, hospitals etc
Mbembe’s Necropolitics
Necropolitics here is defined as “contemporary forms of subjugation of life to the power of death”
The capacity to choose who may be disposable
Necropower is often a practice under which biopolitical, disciplinary & necropolitics
Questions
What is the human being a subject?
What makes a subject a citizen?
Whilst Palestine & South Africa are described as modern day examples of people subjected to necropower — are these simply overt examples?
What is a citizen in a country subjugating the citizen to death?
Is “invisible killing”: death through poverty, through prohibition of access to needs etc, the flexing of necropower?
Is Grenfell Necropolitics?
Is deporting citizens necropolitics?
