Description
HUMANISM - Philosophical outlook that emphasizes the intrinsic value, dignity, and rationality of human beings. Humanistic thought largely characterized the Renaissance and the Enlightenment and contributed to the Protestant Reformation and the Scientific Revolution. Now seen as an essentially atheistic viewpoint (for many religious fundamentalists, the evils of the modern world are summed up in the term ‘secular humanism’), the movement was initially kindled by the desire to expand the medieval focus of Christianity on sin and redemption to embrace the full human experience.
