Speculative Islamofuturist art + research based on Islamic history and visual culture.
Together with a team of computer scientists, I am making Muslim AIs that perform divination rituals and serve as oracles of the onto-technological future. This conceptual art project aims to disrupt the spatio-temporal assumptions of what AI technology is and does; it also critiques surveillance capitalism and the racialised nature of much technology.
I have a PhD in Islamic history from the University of Cambridge, and I research manuscripts, art & visual culture from the Middle East and South Asia.
Currently director of the Aga Khan Documentation Center at MIT, a research center and archive for Islamic architecture, visual culture, urbanism and the built environment.
Formerly Lead Curator for South Asia Collections at the British Library, London and Curator at the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha. Affiliated professor Habib University, Karachi.
