Bio

Part data geek, part designer, and part community organizer, I believe that technology must serve humanity. I write and speak extensively about the future of our personal data. I am known for my work in bringing the human voice to data science with what I call Thick Data, which I describes in my TED talk. My work has been featured in Quartz, New Yorker, Buzzfeed, Techcrunch, The Atlantic, Al Jazeera, Slate, Wired, The Guardian and Fast Company. I hold Brooklyn, Wuhan, Lima, Oaxaca, and Malmö close to her heart. My life philosophy is that you have to go to the edge to discover one’s  center, and to strive to be on the edge, not on edge. I’m a dancer with the world’s first queer and trans Latin dance Academy. I can’t imagine a life without salsa and soca.

H2Ed  (2002)  -  the first national hip-hop education initiative in collaboration with Bronx Museum of Arts, Queens Museum of Arts, and The Schomburg Center
Ethnography Matters - Largest network of ethnographers on slack and longest running blog featuring applied ethnography 
Sudden Compass  - consulting firm advising start-ups and Fortune 500 companies on data and product strategy 
Last Mile (2020)  - COVID relief non-profit delivered 1 million plus masks to impacted communities and advocated for air ventilation policy for essential workers 
Crypto Research and Design Lab (2022) -bringing people back to the center of crypto  

Some of my fave projects: 
Next Frontier Initiative (2017) - I build out the business and social impact case for how to responsibly deliver internet services to Peruvian rural communities in the mountain and jungle regions 
Mexico-Oaxaca Cellphone (2006) I documented the use of cellphones in undocuemtned migrant families 
Bytes of China (2006) I documented the rise of social media use in China, turning my research into a PHD dissertation and strategy work for clients
