Bio

Shyamal Chandra is a freelance software developer/designer based in Pittsburg, Kansas and technical founder of Y Combinator Stage 2 Pre-startup after >2 years with Startup School at Y Combinator. He has diverse and deep interests in AI, machine learning, and deep learning. He spends most of his time helping startups build applications for the Web. He is extremely passionate about MacOS and iOS, and hopes to spend more and more time helping young developers in the community become proficient at frontend and backend development. Since childhood, programming has been Shyamal's passion. Impressed with the capabilities of the BASIC language, he started auditing computer science courses at a local university at the age of six. In high school, he recognized the power of AI and developed a prototype that allowed teachers to insert and query grades using a combination of speech synthesis and recognition. He even worked in the industry as an intern before college writing data-driven web and desktop applications. After entering college, he excelled in almost every subject, especially computer science, while both managing and participating in regional and international programming contests, performing undergraduate teaching duties, starting a Computer Science Honor Society, and presiding over the local ACM and UPE student chapter for two and one year respectively. For his all-rounded scholastic performance, he was awarded a three-year scholarship to attend the Ph.D. program in Computer Science at UCLA. Furthermore, he quickly gained expertise while staying on top of the latest machine learning, robotics, and computer vision research after work hours. He has co-authored nine publications (including one Best Paper award), published one eBook on Bayesian Networks, and co-authored one patent along with being a program committee member for SIGCSE 2020. He has participated in the ACM Regional, CS Games, and Carnegie Mellon programming contest. His hobbies include singing, songwriting, acting, dancing, drawing, photography, filmmaking, editing, piano, ultimate frisbee, basketball, table tennis, volleyball, tennis, chess, and eSports.
