For twenty-five years self taught photographer Russell Frederick has been creating positive images to redefine the visual narratives of Black & Brown people. His activism has been published vastly, featured in documentaries, exhibited and collected in the U.S, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia.
Over the past twenty years, Mr. Frederick’s documentation of Bed Stuy, Brooklyn has challenged the perceptions of beauty, culture and dignity of the community. Russell’s portraits, journalism and documentary work can be seen in the NYTimes, the Daily Beast, the Undefeated, Numero Magazine, Spiegel Magazine, the Root, Ebony and many more publications. He has collaborated, been featured or shot stills for Oscar, Emmy, NAACP image and Sundance Film festival directors. In addition, Russell has lectured at the School of Visual Arts, NYU, the International Center of Photography, Columbia University, the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and many other fine institutions.
Mr. Frederick’s philosophy with photography and commitment to education has taken him to Ethiopia and South Sudan to teach photo workshops sponsored by the United Nations Educational Science Cultural Organization. This mentorship is also part of the legacy of Kamoinge Inc. (a group of people working together) founded in Harlem, NY 1963 by a collective of African American photographers which Russell has been member of since 2004.
Lastly, Mr. Frederick is a dedicated community servant mentoring young men with the Kings Against Violence Initiative in Brooklyn, NY which he is a co-founding / board member of since 2011.
