Normalize people-first language. Terms used in the criminal justice system (โinmateโ, โprisonerโ, โfelonโ, โex-conโ) against those who have caused harm, are used to dehumanize and belittle; to identify people as less than human (making it easier to treat people poorly). It's a strategy to perpetuate the stereotype of a person who committed a crime within our extremely punitive system. Words have power. Choose to speak life.
