Normalize people-first language. Terms used in the criminal justice system (“inmate”, “prisoner”, “felon”, “ex-con”) against those who have caused harm, are used to dehumanize and belittle; to identify people as less than human (making it easier to treat people poorly). It's a strategy to perpetuate the stereotype of a person who committed a crime within our extremely punitive system. Words have power. Choose to speak life.
Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk. ✊🏾
