Visual artist / activist / paper art sculptor @karinasharif
“I don’t want to just make room for women like me I want to make clearings; massive and unapologetic, we take up space.”
My work with paper is a visual representation of the female experience within the African Diaspora. I use paper because dating back to 25 AD, paper has been used to transmit knowledge and preserve history. The medium may appear to be obsolete but in its physical form it takes on new meaning. My sculptures aim to serve the women who wear them as a cocoon, looped and curled by the stories of her ancestors, a shield to protect as she shares her vulnerabilities and a moment to visualize her most future self. I want her to understand her inherent beauty and history is The Art Form.
