The mass incarceration of Black people in the United States is a major issue showcasing much needed prison reform. The number of prisoners has almost quadrupled in the past 50 years . As of 2019, 34% of the 6.8 million people currently incarcerated are African American. African Americans are overall more likely to be stopped by police, arrested, detained before trial, and given harsher sentences than whites. These racial and ethnic disparities in mass incarceration have become a modern civil rights issue of our time!
