Rules of Engagement

Conversations fall apart when people stop listening. Listen always, even if you happen to be speaking. Refusal to listen is refusal to participate in the conversation and will be recognized as such.

1. Everyone has the right to disagree, and my right to disagree protects yours. You are free to disagree with this rule, and we are free to disagree with your disagreement of it.

2. Everyone has the right to be offended, but nobody has the right to demand that another change their behavior based on their choice to take offense.

3. Everyone likes to guess, but nobody really knows the true intent behind another's words. React to words, but ask and confirm before reacting to intent.

4. Keep in mind the difference betwen the word itself and what it represents in context.

5. Emotion is fast, logic is accurate. Discriminate between them, stay on topic, and listen wisely.

6. Remember that people are more than the labels we use to describe them, or those they use to describe themselves.

7. You have a right to respond. If anyone references you directly in a comment, you have a right to the next turn to respond. If anyone references a group you belong to directly, all members of your group present will have the next five minutes to respond, in turn.
Read the Rules.: Clubhouse only allows for three rules, and we have at least seven, so the rules of engagement are listed in the club description. There won’t be a quiz, but:
If you join the discussion,: Everyone in the room will assume that you understand and agree to these rules of engagement. These rules keep the space safe for discussion and are subject to update as improvements are found.
The Goal is Understanding: Very few, if any, arguments are ever “won.” The best outcome is to understand and accept each other and be able to move on from that to a better tomorrow for all.
