When I was in college, I had the keys to our music department and access to the choir rehearsal room where there was a grand piano. I would spend an hour or so in the evening playing... sometimes practicing, other times expressing my inner thoughts and moods... but all of it was improv... It turns out that I had an audience... people who would sit on the stairs outside and listen because something about the way I was playing gave them encouragement and comfort.... lifted their spirits as I expressed mine. Later on, I found that the way I played, not only allowed me to fill indefinite periods of time, but could create a context of comfort during times of grief.
