What is Shared Sisterhood? Shared Sisterhood is a form of inter-relating that encourages authentic emotional interactions by promoting trust, vulnerability, empathy and risk-taking, with an aim of collective advancement for ALL women, in the workplace and beyond.
What is the History of Shared Sisterhood? Shared Sisterhood was launched from the heart and mind of Dr. Tina Opie, as she examined the historic breaches of mistrust between Black and White women at work. Opie extended her work to women from all racioethnic backgrounds. She argued that one can bridge the divide via deep digging into one's own self-awareness and building coalitions by layering authentic, one-on-one relationships. Together with Dr. Beth Livingston, she has begun a research program on the topic, and has been busy discussing the need for Shared Sisterhood with some of corporate America's top leaders and on podcasts such as the Harvard Business Review's Women at Work podcast.
What is the purpose of the Shared Sisterhood group? This Club is the commencement of these relationships. We are a community that is interested in doing the work of deep digging into ourselves so we can forge the authentic emotional interactions that will allow us all to seek progress, while remaining whole. Resources will be shared, workshops and exercises will be worked through, and relationships will be built. We are Sisters.
Dig and Bridge. : Here, we DIG to understand our own assumptions about our identities (e.g., racioethnicity) and how those assumptions frame our perceptions in life. Then, we BRIDGE to connect across our differences.
Enter the room with humility: Use I statements. Intent vs. impact. For those from dominant groups (e.g., White, male), please listen as much as, if not more, than you speak. Value marginalized voices. Respect confidentiality.
Extend grace to yourself and others.: Authentic growth acknowledges mistakes. We can recover from said mistakes if we show each other a little grace. We commit to not take advantage of that grace.
