Description

🇲🇦Descendents of the GHIATA tribe 🇲🇦. When he reached the Maghreb al-Aqsa in the year 788, Idris I was welcomed by the Awerba in Volubilis, who designated him Imam in 789 [1]. Several other important tribes followed suit, such as the Ghomaras, Tsoul, Meknassas, who reign supreme in the region of the Taza gap, the Zouagha and many others [2]. The Kitāb al-Istibṣār from the Almohad period is the first document to mention by name the tribe of Ghiata, who seem to have detached themselves from the group of zenets Matghara and perhaps Miknassa. Ibn Khaldoun indicates that the Ghiata were of the Jewish faith before their conversion to Islam [3], a Jewish population that is well represented in statistics from the colonial era [4]. Ibn Khaldoun reports: “Part of the Berbers professed Judaism, a religion they had received from their powerful neighbors, the Israelites in Syria. Among the Jewish Berbers, we distinguished the Djeraoua, a tribe that inhabited the Aures and to which the Kahena belonged, a woman who was killed by the Arabs at the time of the first invasions. The other Jewish tribes were the Nefouça, Berbers of Ifrikïa, the Fendelaoua, the Medîouna, the Behloula, the Ghiata and the Fazaz, Berbers of the Maghreb-el-acsa [5] ”.
