Essentially Microbial! on Clubhouse

Description

Even as a microbiologist, I sometimes forget how much the Archaeal, Bacterial and Eukaryotic microbes play direct and indirect roles in many aspects of our lives.

Thanks to them, we can enjoy the benefits of delicious fermented foods and beverages, faded jeans, laundry detergents, PCR tests, precious metals for our electronics, antibiotics, magnetic nanoparticles, biofuels, biodegradation of toxic compounds, Xanthan gum (food thickener), etc.  

And in the form of our very own microbiome, they even function as our protectors, establish a healthy immune system, provide us with vitamins and even serotonin!

Importantly, on a global scale, they can deplete a sizable fraction of greenhouse gases (or produce them!) How we use fertilizers, antibiotics, extract fossil fuels can impact this equilibrium.

Join me and my colleagues as we explore this fascinating world of microbes (mainly Archaea and Bacteria) and how they play vital roles in our daily lives.  For many things in life are…essentially microbial!
