(cover-photo cred: Marlena Myles) A collective of graduate students and
professionals working in student affairs in higher education who are
interested in what decolonization and abolition mean for our
universities.
We believe that the frameworks of decolonization and abolition offer
important challenges to higher education as we know it, including the
field of higher education and student affairs. These challenges are
sorely needed in the current moment, which is not so much
unprecedented as the continuation of ongoing legacies of racial and
colonial violence. We also sense that there is growing interest in
these topics, especially among emerging scholars and professional
leaders. However, these are not always easy topics to address in our
own contexts; we perceive there is a need for a somewhat protected
space in which deep, difficult, and risky conversations can happen. We are proposing to convene a collective can that can serve
as such a space, and we are asking if you might be interested in
joining us in envisioning what that might look like.
