Yana Toyber is a visual artist and photographer with a focus on analog photography. Born in the Ukraine, Toyber moved to New York City at the age of two. Her artistic career began at the age of 11, when she performed with the New York City Ballet as a dancer. The recipient of the Kodak Eastman House Award, Scholastic and NFAA Awards, Toyber earned a BFA in photography from New York’s School of Visual Arts. Her photography has appeared in The Fader, Vanity Fair, Nylon, W, Zoo Magazine, Modern painters, S Magazine, Juxtapoz, Autre, as well as various commercial campaigns. Her book of photography, This Time (2015) was exhibited at the MOMA PS1 Book Fair and the Geffen Contemporary MOCA LA Book Fair.
Toyber’s primary interests include feminism, ballet, environmental preservation, biology, nature vs. nurture, and bodies of water. She shoots in Polaroid, large format, medium format, and 35mm film, as well as digitally and underwater.
Her style is a mash-up of documentary and portraiture, and whenever possible Toyber shares a deep connection with her subjects.
