Ahmondylla Best’s music draws on global ritual, Native American, African as well as personal and inherited American experience. She takes her artistic practice far beyond any particular genre. To Ahmondylla, objects tell stories. Gourds, cowrie shells, crystals, sterling silver, brass, copper, combs, bamboo, steel, clay and mirrors are eloquent in representing narratives of human emotion and the female experience, and so Ahmondylla incorporates these items into her multi-dimensional artistic practice. She is a visual artist and musician, author and composer, storyteller, performer, choreographer, filmmaker, director, producer , certified Sound Bath facilitator and educator. Ahmondylla a teaching artist and has: taught music, in residence, for Sharron Miller’s Dance Academy, is responsible for re-designing, and implementing the Visual Vistas program, a visual arts experience for pre-school and kindergarten for Rutgers University’s Paul Robeson Gallery, has taught for New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Wolf Trap program for over 15 years and has directed and performed in numerous off-Broadway productions. Ahmondylla Best is a founder of several performing arts and storytelling groups, including AHMONDYLLA BEST & WOGBLEDOE, LadyGourd Sangoma, and co-founder of Nyamakala Medicine Stories. Ahmondylla has just written and illustrated her first children’s book entitled MOTHER-IN-LAW’S MEAL.
