Cantons was the only child to immigrant parents in a multi cultural and religious home –her mother from Madrid and Catholic, her father French Algerian born to Russian Jewish and Basque parents. Drawing on sources as diverse as Greek and Roman plays and poetry, Italian Renaissance painting, European Medieval illuminated manuscripts and the Western canon of film and music, exploring the human condition and social identity are at the core of Cantons’ work. This is done through a multidisciplinary practice that takes in painting, neon, poetry, text, performance, photography and video, and worked through a filter of thinking about desire, time, loss, presence and absence, language, the elegiac and the memento mori, connecting and disconnecting psychological boundaries in the relationships we have with ourselves and others.
