Valerie Mosley is the founder of BrightUp, a mission-driven wealth-tech platform providing universal access to wealth-building resources and well-being reminders. She serves on the corporate boards of DraftKings, Envestnet, Groupon and Eaton Vance’s family of mutual funds. She also is on the board member of New Profit, a social venture fund that identifies social entrepreneurs and helps them to scale.
Valerie was a Partner, Portfolio Manager and Investment Strategist at Wellington Management Company, LLP, a $1 trillion global money management firm. During her 20-year tenure at the firm, Valerie personally managed billions for institutional clients. She also chaired the firm’s Industry Strategy Group, which took a long-term perspective to identify industry trends, headwinds and tailwinds. As a member of several key investment strategy groups, Valerie helped establish the investment parameters to which team portfolio managers had to adhere.
After leaving Wellington, Valerie invested more actively in private companies that add value both to the shareholders and to society through Valmo Ventures. She was also treasurer and on the investment committee of Mass Ventures, a venture tech fund intent on fueling Massachusetts’s innovation economy. Valerie began her career as Commercial Lending Officer at Chase Manhattan Bank, (1982 – 1984). After receiving her MBA from the Wharton School of Business, Valerie sold institutions corporate and mortgage securities on Wall Street at Kidder Peabody (1986 – 1990). Fascinated with money management, Valerie became Chief Investment Officer at P.G. Corbin Asset Management (1990 – 1992), grew assets 20-fold in less than 3 years, and joined Wellington Management as an investor in 1992.
Valerie graduated in 1982 with a BA in History from Duke, where she served as President of the student body. Valerie has received several awards, including The International Person of the Year by The UK’s Power List, one of the 50 Most Powerful Women in Business and one of the Top 75 African Americans on Wall Street by Black Enterprise Magazine. Valerie enjoys biking, spending time with her three children, and sharing her insights about Managing Money and Life Parallels.
