🇨🇺born in 🇺🇸  An emerging advocate. A heterosexual Latina with white-presenting privilege. I’m mixed-class; a cis-gender woman with significant neurological divergence and significant disability - these move me further from privilege. The agreements I value are Respect, Vulnerability, Inclusion, and Confidentiality.

🧠 On 8/8/20 I suffered an ischemic stroke - spent 1 week in the ICU, another 3 in the 🏥 during that time they found bleeding.  A quick encore in the ICU confirmed a hemorrhagic conversion - bessed to have avoided brain surgery. From there went to an acute rehab that challenged my perception of what I would be capable of after stroke.  

So they did find I had a PFO (patent foramen ovale) - a hole in my ❤️ that didn’t close the way it should have after I was born coupled with a clotting disorder APLS - voila a stroke!  11/20 had surgery to repair the hole. 

I’ve been told 20% of people have PFOs, and less than 2% of those people have strokes. I don’t see myself as unlucky for being in that slim margin. I’m still here for a reason. I just launched a blog at https://a-stroke-of-luck.weebly.com/blog.

I still struggle with left side neglect/extinction and a lack of sensation that runs head to toe along the entirety of my left side.  I also have cognitive issues with attention, working memory, and executive function – all fancy words for I forget, thinking hurts, and words are hard. ❓🙇🏻‍♀️ 😶

I’ll never be the exact person I was prior to the stroke – that’s ok. I’ve been working hard to get to 💯% of my new self - it’s a work in progress to be the best me possible. I invite you to connect.
