“When I was born in 1974 in Oskaloosa, I was soon transferred to the University of Iowa where I was diagnosed with Eagle-Barrett Syndrome, commonly known as prune belly syndrome, a rare congenital disorder. The syndrome is characterized by either a partial or complete lack of abdominal muscles. At birth, my prognosis was grim. Doctors said I would most likely not live beyond a year. I spent the first three years of my life in hospital going through surgeries. Since then, I’ve have survived more than 50 operations and kidney failure at age 21.
I remember back in 1997 while at hospital getting out of bed looking out the window toward a patio. There were people out there and it looked like a nice day and I wanted to be outside. I started to cry and then I prayed to God that if I could ever get healthy, I would change my life and commit to helping others.
After a kidney transplant I began to attend church. I currently work as a manager for a group of car dealerships where I spend my days training, motivating and inspiring my employees to be the best.
I have starred a 501c3 Non-profit that aims at spreading the word to find living kidney donors as well as education and support to those currently on dialysis.
