On average, every ICU in the country has a patient with ARDS – currently, the number of patients with ARDS is higher due to COVID-19.
Mechanical forces are everywhere, and our bodies rely on these forces to function and maintain homeostasis. We often think of our bodies in terms of cells and genes, but they are also complex mechanical and biochemical systems. Mechanical forces function as biological signals and are as important as chemical signals in regulating biological homeostasis and maintaining overall health. The field of biomedical science lacks a comprehensive understanding of the interconnected relationships between chemical and mechanical signals. I study these relationships in pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells in order to both develop a better understanding of how cellular systems communicate, and to better understand the mechanisms by which infections such as flu and COVID-19 trigger and disrupt both chemical and mechanical signaling.
