Bio

Sajitha R Shankhar is an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist. Her work explores the myths and mysteries of the female body and also resists the operation of patriarchal definitions and power as could be seen in her two important series 'Alterbodies' and 'Archetypes'. She has had her first exhibition in 1987 and has travelled and worked across the world since then. She lived and worked in Cholamandal Artists' Village in Tamilnadu for 19 years before shifting base to Kerala in 2005. She has had over 30+ solo shows in India and abroad and has been part of many significant group shows. She has won many esteemed awards in the art world including the Charles Wallace Award( British Council), State Awards from Kerala & Tamilnadu, Senior Fellowship (Ministry of Culture, India), Cleveland Biennale Grand Prize and most recently the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Her biography is being written by acclaimed American art historian Gail Levin. Sajitha's latest show is coming up in New York, in September 2021. Currently she is based out of Trivandrum, Kerala.
