Biography: The Gulf Coast has raised some of the most prolific artists of our day, and the sound of Rez Burna embraces influences of the region’s bounce, jazz, soul, and hip hop that shaped the Louisiana-born, Mississippi-raised lyricist. Rez’s ability to write memorable hooks is evident from the first listen to any of his songs, but it’s the socially conscious, subject matter and witty lyricism that keeps people coming back for more. “The artist that influenced me the most has to be Lil Wayne. I've heard a lot of people mention how they grew up on 2Pac or Biggie, and in a way I did too, but I have to attribute Cash Money and No Limit Records for molding my sound.”
After taking several years off from music to finish both undergraduate and graduate education, Burna finally feels as though the time is right for him to return to the scene, this time touting a message of Pan-Africanism and revolution. “I got married and had two children. I’ve just been working, going to school, and living life. I didn’t mean to take a break, it just kind of happened. With everything going on in the world, I feel like it’s important that I come back and spread my message.”A huge fan of revolutionary, Pan-Africanist, Stokely Carmichael, Rez is sure to keep that vision alive through his music.
