My name is Phillip Marcus Jr. and I have 12 years of experience as an educator and an educational consultant focused on anti-racism, school culture, and culturally sustaining practices. I have served as NYC teacher, a middle school literacy coach, a school and district leader, an Adjunct Professor of English and Adolescent Literacy, and an aspiring critically conscious educator and prospective doctoral student.
My journey from my role as a special educator in the Soundview section of the Bronx to a District Director of Equity, Inclusion, and Wellness in a predominantly white school district in Westchester, NY has been an active unlearning of way I was socialized to see and think about the world. Learning to view my work as the constant process of surfacing and disrupting issues of power, inequity, and oppression has helped me to move closer to the educator that I’d like to be and has led to a lot of learning in the process.
My hope is to share my experiences with other folx, within and beyond education, and engage in enlightening conversations about how racism impacts the belief systems of educators, school cultures, and school systems.
