Pastor Thomas A. Dixon
Born in Chicago, IL, 68 year old pastor and community advocate Thomas Dixon and his wife (Vanessa) have made South Carolina their home since 1985. In 2005, Pastor Dixon founded Summerville Christian Fellowship which he pastored until 2012 when the call of social justice took him out of the pulpit and into the streets.
Over the years, Dixon has worked with a variety of social justice organizations including the S.C. Re-Entry Initiative (SC Crime Reduction Coalition), S.C. Progressive Network, the Fight for 15, the Quality Education Project, Moms Demand Action, Arm-In-Arm (formerly Gun Sense SC) and his own virtual organization: The Coalition - People United to Take Back Our Community. In 2014, 2015 and 2017, he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Charleston Alliance for Fair Employment (C.A.F.E.), and currently sits on the Board of Directors for Healthcare Workers United and Brady United (formerly the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence).
Pastor Dixon is most notably recognized for his peacekeeping efforts in North Charleston and Charleston, S.C. in the aftermath of the Walter Scott shooting and the Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church tragedy, and for his 2016 run for the U.S. Senate in South Carolina. Last year, in 2019, he also ran for mayor of the city of North Charleston, S.C.
In March of 2018, the National Bar Association awarded Dixon the Wiley A. Branton Issues Symposium Award for his work to end gun violence, and in 2018, he became one of the first 9 recipients of the “Angels In Our Community” Spot Light Awards. Next month, Pastor Dixon will receive the Harvey Gantt Triumph Award for Lasting Contributions to Civil and Human Rights from the YWCA of Greater Charleston at their 49th Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.
