Azella C. Collins, PRP
Azella started studying parliamentary procedure after attending a contentious PTA meeting in 1976. After the meeting she went to the neighborhood library and utilized the ever faithful Dewey Decimal System to find books on meetings. Listed among very few books on the topic was Roberts Rules of Order. The library did not have a copy; however, there were many references on meeting procedures. Armed with a book on meeting policy and procedure Azella returned to the PTA meeting. It took six months for the group to even think about meeting management tools. The group continued to struggle.
In 1976, the Internet was in an embryonic stage. Azella went back to the library and went through every book listed under, ‘Meetings’. She went to Kroch and Brentano’s and purchased Roberts Rules of Order.
Under the tutelage of Joan Bundley and Dr. Avis McDonald, Azella passed the membership exam, the registered exam, and successfully completed the Professional Qualifying Course at the NAP Biennial Conference in San Diego. Membership in the National Association of Parliamentarians has been very stimulating.
Azella has served as president of the Illinois Association of Parliamentarians and has been recycled many times through the Registered Parliamentarians of Illinois Unit. She has also served as parliamentarian for city, state, national, and international organizations.
