Mateo has worked in various capacities on over 20 shorts and 7 feature films. In 2012, he co-wrote/directed the Award Winning feature thriller, BLAZE YOU OUT Starring; Elizabeth Peña, Raoul Trujillo, released by Lionsgate in July of 2013. Summer 2013, he produced DRUNKTOWN’S FINEST with producing partner Chad Burris, and Executive Producer Robert Redford, which premiered in the NEXT category at Sundance Film Festival in 2014 and won numerous awards internationally including the Grand Jury Prize at HBO’s OUTFEST. In the summer of 2014 Mateo associate produced on the feature film BARE Starring; Dianna Agron, Paz de La Huerta, Gary Farmer, which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in April 2015. In 2016, he produced his first television segment for the Award Winning European network Arté. INTO THE NIGHT featuring George R.R. Martin and Sibel Kekilli.
Mateo currently teaches courses in Film History, Digital Media Literacy, Photography, Producers Craft, and sUas Technology. He continues to lecture at various film festivals and universities on the subject of independent film production and development, Latino and First Nations independent cinema, and immersive media. Mateo is currently a co-pi on a recently awarded (2019) National Science Foundation Grant for Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Pathways into Geoscience grant: GP-EXTRA: Place-Based Participatory Path to Geoscience, that endeavors to expand interdisciplinary STEAM initiatives in Engineering, Environmental Science, and Digital Media Arts. He is also leading the development of the Cannabis, Hemp Enterprise & Technology Program at NNMC.
