Steve Eppell directs the Nanoscale Orthopedic Biomaterials Laboratory in the Biomedical Engineering Dept. at Case Western Reserve University. He designs, fabricates and tests biomimetic bone substitutes intended to bear load upon implantation and to be resorbed and replaced by the patient’s own bone in the long term. He’s also interested in how nanoscopic pieces of tissue behave mechanically. The goal in that effort is to determine when a person is on the road to having problems like tendinopathy before they feel pain or experience loss of function. He tries to pursue all this science and engineering with an open heart, a meager but growing sense of humor, and a life balance that includes politics, the arts, and profound human interaction.
