I thrive at the intersection of worlds. I've lived in a dozen countries and speak more than a handful of languages. I especially like working in war zones and refugee camps, but lately have found homes outside the Middle East in Spain, Morocco, and Cuba.

My clinical work is a blend of internal medicine, gynecology, psychiatry, human rights, public health, and holistic practices. Currently, I'm a COVID and primary care doctor at Lummi Nation.

My consulting practice ranges from COVID-19 advising to working with health tech companies and international NGOs and coaching speakers who want to give a TED-styled talk.

My novels (Aria, published by Harcourt and 5 international presses, and forthcoming Kabubble) explore complex issues like navigating grief without religion or ritual and the land mines of humanitarianism.

My most fulfilling job was as director of curation and stage for TEDMED; I remain a friend/ devoted fan of TEDMED whenever it revives.

My most audacious dream is Future Villages. A lifelong experiment to buy an abandoned village in Spain, redevelop and diversify its economy, invite 1000 refugees and locals to repopulate the village in a massive, longitudinal living study that aims to reinvent refugee integration, intentional community, and rural livelihoods.
