Story time: In 2019 I headed a social media + music initiative to empower normal people of any age to pay for the extinguishing of the Australian Fires by doing tik tok challenges and steaming a custom made 30 second song for the project.
I worked with NASA Fire, Cal Fire, Supertanker, Earth Alliance and a number of celebrities and influencers on the project and we were just about ready to hard launch when I got a warning phone call from Apple Music. The next day they cut their stream payout rate from $0.006 per stream to $0.003 per stream, Justin Bieber’s fan page put out that instructional post teaching how to stream Yummy on repeat while you sleep to make it to Billboard (my idea for the initiative), and the Australian Government asked us not to launch so that we wouldn’t make the country look “unappealing to tourists.”
Some people would rather save face than save the actual world. I’ve learned a bit about politics and strategy since then and been behind the scenes of some of the biggest shifts in recent culture.
