Explorer with National Geographic & Explorers Club, Social Innovator, Feminist, Tibet Specialist, Public Speaker
Born a Tibetan refugee in India and raised in Canada, Dr Rabgey is the first Tibetan to hold a PhD in Feminist Anthropology (University of London). She is also the first Tibetan Commonwealth Scholar, an Explorers Club 50 member and a National Geographic Explorer. In 1998, she and her sister Dr Tashi Rabgey co-founded Machik with their parents as a nonprofit whose mission is to grow a global community committed to a stronger future for Tibet. In 20+ years, Machik has mentored and supported education for thousands of people in Tibet and in diaspora, mostly women and girls. Current work focusses on civic engagement, gender equity and social innovation. Programs feature a Tibetan Ideas Festival, a global platform to learn about cultural producers and change makers in Tibet, an annual Gender Summit, the first Tibetan program on Healthy Masculinity, and more. Machik also supports social innovators inside Tibet working in education, film, gender equity, conservation, health, and so on. Dr Rabgey and her sister were recognized by Harvard University as Women Inspiring Change, along with Stacey Abrams, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and Kamala Harris. Dr Rabgey and her family were awarded the Meritorious Service Cross by the Governor-General of Canada. She is a frequent public speaker, including at Yale University, Harvard University, UC Santa Cruz, and the Nobel Peace Forum. Rabgey first traveled to Tibet with her family in 1987.
"I am truly passionate about social engagement to bridge cultural divides for Tibet and globally. By engaging with empathy, we can make impact for social and environmental justice."
