Napoleon is arguably one of the most successful military leaders in history. He won crucial battles, such as Austerlitz , and conquered a large portion of Europe. However, he was also a statesman and he was very good at this too. His enactment of the Civil Code, the most important set of laws in France, demonstrates his political ability. The Napoleonic Code (or Code Napoleon in French ) was a law code established under Napoleon I. It was first published on 21 March 1804. It was drafted in large part by a commission of four eminent jurists and entered into force on 1 March 1804. The Code, with its stress on clearly written and accessible law, was a major step in replacing the previous patchwork of feudal laws. Historian Robert Holtman regards it as one of the few documents that have influenced the whole world. At the start of the French Revolution, the laws of pre- revolutionary France were severely outdated. They were complex and changed frequently. This answer will look at the laws of pre-revolutionary France and see what Napoleon did to change them.
