Hi, I’m Josh. I’m a photographer based in San Francisco, relocating to NYC in spring 2021.
I’m developing a series of historically-informed photo books about people, machines, and nature. I’m profiling a former U-2 spy plane mechanic who rebuilds vintage motorbikes, exploring the role these two machines play in the American experience. For another project, I’ve spent years among demolition derby drivers in a former Gold Rush town in the Sierra Mountains, comparing their rituals of destruction to their predecessors’ use of machines to extract wealth from the ground. Next year, I’m planning a military and environment related documentary project in Antarctica ... I can’t say more about that one here, but I’d love to connect with with editors or publishers interested in these topics.
Commercially, I’ve made images for Facebook, Bumble & bumble, Boeing, Chris Hadfield’s Open Lunar Foundation, and others.
When I’m not behind the camera, I provide digitech, lighting tech, and production services to clients including The New York Times, WIRED, Apple, Whole Foods, Men’s Wearhouse, Restoration Hardware, and The North Face. I’ve also been a studio intern / apprentice to Guggenheim Fellow and photographer McNair Evans. Learn more about my services for photographers/producers here: www.joshrobinsonstudio.com/production
