RESURFACE (PART III)

Soundinstallation, transducer on architecture, 2020-21

Our world is increasingly based on algorithms and thus on databases. But just as there is a „gender gap“ in many languages, with the feminine form dissolving into the masculine, the databases on which algorithms are based are also full of gender-related data gaps. For example, voice corpora (databases based on the human voice) contain up to 40% fewer female voices than male voices. RESURFACE PART III makes audible the biographies of 100 19th/20th century female artists. A female computer voice reads the Wikipedia entries of these female artists. RESURFACE PART III thus not only corrects the „stolen history“ of 19th/20th century female artists, but also expands the „female“ voice corpus with material.

The voice is attached by a transducer and uses the existing architecture as a sound body. During the 2. Lockdown in 2021 Johanna Reich placed the transducer at different places in Cologne transforming the architecture into a female voice.
