✍️ A young male immigrant (David C. Hurd) sits at a small desk in his one half of a rented room. On his desk is a flag of Jamaica – symbolizing the old country, a picture of the Brooklyn Bridge 🌉 - symbolizing the new.
💌 He begins a pen-pal courtship with a beautiful and bright young woman (Avril L. Cato) living in Jamaica (father from Cuba and mother from Haiti). He writes to her for nearly a year. He proposes in a letter-she accepts in a letter. They physically meet for the first time, the day before their wedding. 💒
This is a true love story about David, my granddad.🌹
💕Papa’s Letters: Love via First Class Male, an immigrant’s story, includes copies of the original letters; the actual love letters are housed at the Brooklyn Historical Society.🏛
I quote judiciously from these letters in my book to illustrate their elegance, poetry, literacy and human dimension. The existence of these letters poses a much larger question: is letter writing a lost literary art form in modern Caribbean life or, for that matter, in the world-at-large? 🌍
