I retired after 33-years in the Oklahoma State Senate in 2014 and have remained active as a cannabis activist and advocate. I represented Oklahoma City’s predominantly African American “Eastside,” where i spoke regularly, first as a Senate researcher and then a Senator, on health/mental health/human services issues that disproportionately affect the health, economic/social well-being, and liberty of the poor, minorities, women, children, and people with disabilities.
I was the first woman and African/Native American to win a major party US Senate nomination in Oklahoma. I ran unsuccessfully for governor of Oklahoma in 2018 against an all male ticket. That same year, however, Oklahoma voters overwhelmingly approved my signature legislation legalizing medical cannabis. My Mother’s illness and subsequent transition during that time frame was made better because of cannabis.
A 2012 Jon Stuart Daily Show “Bro. Choice” skit featured my paradoxical spilled semen amendment that led to the defeat of Oklahoma’s “Personhood” Bill.
I have background experience in Appropriations, Health and Human Services, Energy, Finance, Veterans, Public Safety, and legislative Rules. I regularly worked across the aisle on issues affecting people with disabilities, criminal justice reform and cannabis policy reform.
I was the 2014 Oklahoma Democratic Party Veteran’s Committee Legislator of the Year, served as vice chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party, and chaired of the Oklahoma Coalition To Abolish The Death Penalty, where I led a statewide campaign against putting the death penalty in the Oklahoma Constitution.
I was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma, and have lived in Dustin, Idabel, Oklahoma City, Stella and Forest Park. I am the biological mother of three adult children, and grandmother to two granddaughters and a grandson. I graduated with honors from OKC’s Frederick A. Douglass High School, from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and received a Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling from Langston University, Oklahoma’s only HBCU. I am a lifelong member of The Church Of The Living God.
I am committed to getting people engaging in the political process especially regarding cannabis via voting and strategies that guarantee that they vote.
