John Konrad V is a ship captain, author, and cofounder of gCaptain.com and UnofficialNetworks.com
He is a New York Maritime College distinguished alumnus and is currently working with AI algorithms as COO of the MIT startup blkSAIL.
Konrad founded the company Unofficial Networks LLC in 2006 and has served as CEO since that time. Unofficial Networks LLC is the parent company of gCaptain.com, the world's most frequented website dedicated to publishing maritime news with over 2 million monthly pageviews. Konrad served as the CTO, CFO, and CoFounder of UnofficialNetworks.com, today's leading mountain sports news site. Since launch, UnofficialNetworks has served over 80 million pageviews. As a journalist, Konrad worked as a contributor at Forbes and has written or edited articles for The New York Times, Huffington Post, The Daily Beast and Wall Street Journal. He has also contributed to top maritime industry publications including NOAA Weather Log, Lloyd's List, Fairplay, and The Maritime Executive. John's interviews and consulting include features on NPR, BBC, CBC, NBC, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair, Coast Guard Compass, and The US House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources.
Konrad holds a 'United States Master of Vessels any gross tons, upon ocean' (Master Unlimited) license, and has lead numerous teams in world record offshore exploration projects. He worked directly with Mukesh and Anil Ambani as Chief Maritime Officer for the discovery of Reliance KG-D6, India's largest deposit of natural gas, and the largest such discovery in the world at the time. Later he was Chief Maritime Officer for a Chevron project that achieved the world record for drilling the world's deepest well.
Konrad is on the board of directors of Sea Ahead and Six Maritime. He is a member of the Council of American Master Mariners, American Merchant Marine Veteran Association, and the Navy League of the United States. He is an Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute and an Honored Fellow of the International Dynamic Positioning Operators Association. He is a recipient of the US Navy Combined Maritime Forces Naval Support Award. More recently, Konrad was honored by Fort Schuyler as Distinguished Alumni Of The Year.
