Bio

I am a physician scientist and clinical cardiolgist whose focus is the study and treatment of heart failure.

I attended medical school at Boston University, did my residency at the University of Washington, and Cardiolgy Fellowship at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

I am currently Professor of Medicine and medical director of cardiac transplant at University of California, San Diego.

My research is on the study and treatment of Heart Failure. My research training formally began in the laboratory of Gordon Keller, a preeminent stem cell scientist. While in the Keller Lab, I contributed to seminal papers demonstrating techniques for the isolation of enriched populations of cardiovascular progenitor cells from pluripotent stem cells and the utility of these cells for modeling cardiovascular disease. While at UCSD, I have been inspired to use these cells to study and treat rare cardiovascular diseases. Patients with rare disorders are significantly underserved by research communities. With appropriate resources, I firmly believe that precise treatments for these diseases can be rapidly translated to the bedside.

Over the last decade, I have focused on Danon Disease, a rare cardiovascular disorder associated with severe hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. My work was inspired by a patient who died from the disease under my care. I developed novel in vivo and in vitro models of Danon in my laboratory and more recently invented a gene therapy specifically for these patients. The treatment was patented and licensed by a pharmaceutical company and is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 trial I helped design.

In addition to my basic and translational research, I also perform clinical research in heart failure. I have high-impact publications on various topics, including cardiac transplant, mechanical circulatory support, and palliative care. I have assisted with writing guidelines from the American College of Cardiology and served on advisory boards and committees for numerous cardiovascular societies.
