As a teenager in the late 1970s, Dr. Jim Ellsworth received his first Qur'an from his father, who was working for the Saudi government as a personnel consultant. On 9/11, that made him among the U.S. military and intelligence communities' seniormost leaders who'd READ the Qur'an, and could pull it off the shelf & say, "Hey, this stuff isn't in there!"
Thus began a decade & a half's work studying the Qur'an, ahadith, fiqh & aqidah and helping to lead the counternarrative fight--first, against Da'esh & al-Qa'ida and subsequently against the symbiotic narrative peddled by western Islamophobes. At the end of Ramadan in 2019, he made his shahada in a ceremony officiated by Shaykh As-Sayyid Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi, and formally became his student. They're collaborating on a project to apply modern educational tools & methods to make the traditional education of prospective Islamic scholars "at the feet of their predecessors" more widely available to seekers of sacred knowledge outside Muslim lands.
