Bio

Minister. Educator. Mentor. Daughter. Friend.

“I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth!” Psalm 34:1 serves as the theme for the life and service of Dr. April Hearn. A vibrant worshiper, mentor, educator, life-long student and lover of God, she is a sought-after preacher, keynote speaker, counselor and conference presenter for people of all ages and backgrounds.

She has earned a B.S. Degree in Secondary Education, specializing in Biology and General Science from Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana, a Masters in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College and a Master of Divinity from Ecumenical Theological Seminary, both in the city of the Detroit. After 10 years as a middle school science teacher, the Lord opened the door for Dr. April to enter into ministry full-time at New Prospect. Dr. April Hearn faithfully served under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Wilma R. Johnson for 15 years. During that time, she functioned as the Pastor of Children and Youth, Administrative Assistant to Pastor Johnson and coordinator of ministry events and community projects. Rev. April currently serves as a full-time member of the pastoral staff at New Prospect MBC.

In June of 2019, Dr. April Hearn was conferred the Doctor of Ministry Degree from Ecumenical Theological Seminary. Her dissertation was titled, Behind the Veil: Domestic Abuse in Christian Homes. The focus of the study was to not only raise awareness concerning the reality of domestic abuse within the Christian home, but to discuss the ways in which Biblical misinterpretation transforms scripture from texts of liberation and grace into instruments of terror and justification for brutality. Dr. April’s desire is to empower the Christian community with the tools necessary to engage in what she calls “dangerously brave” conversations on the topic of Domestic Abuse/Intimate Partner Violence.

A strong advocate for speaking words of affirmation to one’s own Spirit, she can often be heard declaring, “I’m a thermostat… not a thermometer!”
