Reluctant to be on yet another social media platform 😳 So this better be good :-)
Public school kids in my New York City neighborhood call me “the storyteller” 🤩
After years of research and teaching in the academy, I found my lifelong calling in helping to diversify children’s media in 2013 together with the esteemed typographer Koroush Beigpour. Our world first Arabic and Persian (aka Farsi) pedagogically-advanced non-toxic educational maple wood blocks, made in Vermont, earned our social impact start-up (Dr. Bashi™️) a Wonder Woman Award nomination in the Designer/Inventor category by the US industry "Women in Toys" organization.
Among Dr. Bashi™️ community work to diversify children’s educational and art spaces in New York and beyond, in 2017, I began writing and publishing empowering, educational yet fun, realistic, and playful picture books with Dr. Bashi™️ — like our critically-acclaimed “P is for Palestine: A Palestine Alphabet Book” among others — for and about erased, maligned and/or misrepresented children and their homelands/communities (much like my own self as an Iranian kid growing up without almost no positive media representation in a deeply Iran/Islamophobic time in Sweden).
So expanding our social justice diverse children’s book series is the crux of my heart.
And now since I’m at it (anyone checking the word count?) I might as well also add that having been diagnosed at a “relatively” young age for one of the rarest types of cancers (Appendiceal Pseudomyxoma Peritonei) at its most metastasized and highest grade in late 2019 AND beating it during COVID, I still can’t believe I have to engage in postcolonial anti-racist feminist social criticism (it’s tiring 😉).
