Dj Nik Red spins from the heart to heal the soul and intrigue the mind. Influenced by griots, song writers, poets and the occasional novelist, nik will take you on a trip from bars to beaches, gender outlaws and mind controllers that inhabit our multitude of communities.
He has been spinning music and connecting dots in the diaspora for over 20 years.
My love affair with music began when I was just a kid. Living with a father who was a musician, he fostered an interest in a wide spectrum of musical genres from the time we could crawl. When I was a teenager, I got into making mix tapes. Music inspired me and was my rock when I came out as a queer teen. One Friday night I had the opportunity to play some music at my queer youth group’s coffeehouse. It ignited something in me and I decided this was something I ‘ve got to do. I moved to Toronto in the mid 1990’s and stumbled into a wonderful place called CKLN 88.1 fm. I was soon volunteering there as a tech and doing the occasional on-air fill in before programming a weekly show with Karen Augustine called B.A.S.S (blak Afrikan sistas of soul). After a year and half on B.A.S.S, I moved onto my own show on CKLN - RedLight Special and then Afrotransit, which continued for a few years until CKLN folded.
As a person who has a zest for life and an uncanny knack for stepping in muddy puddles, I get great joy from seeing people respond and participate to the tracks I mix. I like my music to reflect the diversity of the community I live in which means pushing the boundaries of race, sexuality and gender. It is how I live .... It is how I play.
